Painting vinyl shutters – can it really be done

One of the best ways to give your tired looking home a facelift is with a fresh coat of paint.  And yes, painting vinyl shutters should definitely be in your plans.  You can turn a drab looking house into a spectacular looking home by simply choosing the right paint colors to accent your home's key features.  Painting vinyl shutters, window trims, doors and pillars is an excellent strategy.

There are a few key things to do when painting vinyl shutters.  You shutters must be clean before you paint them.

  • First, make sure you wash off your shutters using a mild detergent.  You may need to use a scrub brush to remove mildew and debris.
  • Second, shutters must be completely dry.
  • Finally, gently go over each shutter with 120 grit sandpaper to rough them up so that the paint will adhere to them nicely.

You are now ready to start painting.  Choose an accent color that will draw them away from the house.  A bold color can be fun.

We recommend that you use a primer first when painting vinyl shutters.  Primer works to help keep the final paint in place rather than it bubbling or pealing off in a short time.  You may find it easier to paint your shutters if you remove them from your house versus trying to paint them in place.  Shutters are challenging to paint so you may consider using a spray gun to eliminate the paint from running.
